Hello,

I just picked up this piece at a yard sale for $ 15 and wanted to know if I paid too much.

All of these six coins have an S mint mark per the attached fuzzy-looking photo that my Epson produced scanning through the hard plastic covering.

The 2012 r s yeoman blue book has two types of 1979-S proof sets:

a) filled S @ a $ 4 current value

b) clear S @ a $ 50 current value

Here are my questions:

1) What is the metal composition of 'each' coin?

2) If four of the six coins are determined to be composed of silver, why does the blue book have a current value of only $ 4.

3) Do ALL proof set coin sets have a 'S' mint mark produced in San Francisco?

4) Is the rarity of this piece based only upon the presence of a clear 'S' mint mark on the Susan B. Anthony coin or should other factors be taken into consideration?

5) Are these close up photos showing a clear S or a filled S?

Please note that the second close up photo of the 'S' is taken with the coin rotated 180 degrees compared to the first shot.

copper cent, CuNi nickel, non-silver clad on the rest.

They're not.

Proofs from 68-up with S mintmarks were from SF

Other than errors or exceptional high TPG, just the S on Susie counts.

I'd say clear (type 2), but I am not an expert on these. Side by side, I could tell. If it is, you made out like an obese rodent.

I recently found these side-by-side pictures and related descriptive verbiage comparing a clear(type 2) vs. a blob(type 1) S mint mark.

Both the author and authenticity of this comparative study, however, are unknown to me so I still need CCF members' input insofar as to whether or not these articles and related photos are accurate.

Additional opinions are also still welcomed regarding as to whether or not the featured Susan B. coin is a 'clear(type 2)' variety since BiggFredd was not 100% sure.

Finally, what as the last year that San Francisco produced a silver proof coin?

thanks,
mdpmedia

I corrected myself by finding the fine print below the above photos and verbiage I just posted. It appears that Ken Potter produced this narrative and related pictures.

2012

If you mean in the regular 5-6 coin sets, 1970. There are also premium silver sets, commem dollars, 71-76 Ikes, ASEs, etc.

Would anyone else require another increased magnification closeup photo of the Susan B.'s 'S' mint mark in order to be able to give their opinion as to the existence or not of a Type II coin?

Because of the presence of the encasing plastic I seem to be encountering difficulties producing a larger and more detailed photo.

I will try other photo methods, however, but would prefer to first see additional opinions and comments as to whether or not a larger and clearer photo is really going to add anything additional of value to the decision making process.

Thanks,
mdpmedia
