Hi everybody. My first post here. I recently found, in a bag of coins hidden in the closet of a deceased relative, this coin. I have never collected coins, but I knew better than to clean it in any way. This is a photo of the coin, just as I found it. Does anyone know the value, or where I might go if I wanted to sell it?

I have larger, clearer photos if it would help. Thanks in advance.

RIC 450[j]: Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. Mint of Asia, 255-256 AD. IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right, dot below bust / VICTORIA AVG, Victory standing right, holding palm & handing wreath to emperor standing opposite holding spear. Dot in wreath above, dot in exergue.

Not sure of the value. Perhaps $15-$25. Value might go up if you know the provenance.

Thank you jwharper. As I said, I am Very new to this. Since there was only this ONE ancient coin, and the value is less than $50 I will probably keep it for memory sake. The bag had lots of silver dollars, half dollars, etc. so I will pursue their value on other forums. Flash

Your coin is a nice coin, but the value of your U.S. silver will be much higher. However, you may want to stick around and watch the posts on this forum. Collecting Ancients can be very rewarding and educational. Good luck with the other coins.

This is a very nice coin which dates to 255-256 AD. The legends read: IMP CP LIC GALLIENVS PF AVG/VICTORIA AVG. It is RIC I, #450 and struck in Antioch.

Even though I am not a "coin collector", I feel very comfortable here on the forum, and thank each of you who have responded. As recommended, I will continue to haunt the forum, and who knows . . . may become a collector. Hmmmmmm? Flash

Good way to get hooked on ancients is to hang around the forum. BTW:

flashback! The folks here are very helpful, as I can attest to when I first started collecting several months ago.

Nice coin and very nice detail on both the obverse and reverse.

Gallienus minted dozens and dozens of different reverses. I collect the 'Zoo' series which feature different animals like the stag, antelope, boar, lion, along with Mythical Creatures like the Centaur, Pegasus and Gyphon, plus many more. This emperor is highly collectible.

Once you find how fascinating the history behind these coins can be, you can get hooked real easy! Have fun!
