I had posted the coin on the right about a year ago. A CCF member helped me to ID it as: Augustus, Philippi; Victory, Military Standards:)

The coin on the left came to me in the same uncleaned lot. Had it soaking in olive oil for about a year. When inspecting it I was surprised that I did not see the resemblance earlier. I think that it too is an Augustus Philippi.

What do you think?

It was my understanding that this Augustus Philippi coin commemorated the defeat of Brutus & Cassius by Marc Anthony & Augustus in 42BC. FYI, Brutus committed suicide in this battle and Anthony covered him in a purple robe. Great history surrounding this battle. Check out wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Philippi

Wildwinds lists the years minted from 31BC-14AD. 46 years!

Interesting how both have the "fabric" of older Greek coins--the standards are quite different from my Romans.
Their manufacturing process must have been different from the western Roman mints?
Great set!
