IMHO the MARCUS AEMILIUS SCAURUS is the prettiest of the bunch and the one I would get if I had the resources available. Second to that I would pick the Marcus Calidius, Q Metellus & Cn Fulvius AR Denarius.
But let me ask you a question. Do you have any kind of collection strategy in mind or are you just picking out coins at random because you like the looks? Nothing wrong with that and I think that may be how I got started many long years ago. But I also remember early on that I wanted to collect at least one coin from each of the first 12 Caesars. I guess if you don't have a strategy yet, you will eventually. Sometimes just based on the coins one buys will-nilly a strategy will materialize.
Regardless, good luck and let us know what you pick.
Regards,

Right now no real strategy. I would like to eventually get a coin from every ruling faction/period and maybe some of the bigger battles if they have coins depicting them.
But at the moment mostly just browsing and seeing what I like. Theres so many coins I dont ever really expect to be able to ever get a full set (i guess maybe have an outside shot at it after many many years) but for the moment I'm just randomly picking out things like a kid in the candy isle.
My modern collection started the same way with random commem coins new and old that I liked and then I decided to try and complete the set.
This part of the collection may turn into something more or if anyone has some interesting ideas for it, but at the moment will more than likely be a random collection of coins that caught my eye

Well, you've picked out some nice coins for sure. I have been trying to get one coin from each of the recognized Imperial rulers for years, but there are some that are either just very elusive or too darn expensive for me. I think the last I checked I am shy 17 emperors.
I recently completed my set of denarii of each of the first 12 Caesars. It took me years and not too few dollars to manage the last couple of denarii (Caligula, Claudius, and Otho). But when it was complete I could have busted a button or two off my shirt. Still can when I think about it.
There are people on this forum with all kinds of collection strategies. One likes to collect all the Popvli Romani coins, especially from the London mint, and another collects Septimius Severus. That doesn't mean they limit themselves to just these coins, but that is their emphasis. I guess what I'm saying is that with Ancients, the strategies are almost limitless.
Once again, good luck, and keep us posted.

Jw thank you I am leaning towards the Scaurus as I love the chariot depiction.
I do really like the idea of having a coin from every ruler/ruling period representing the rise and fall of the emipre and may end up pursing that one. Legion coins I love as well but know far to little about them as to how feasible any sort of set could be.
Even if I end up trying to set collect with anything I never limit myself to just that. In a month or two I may have 100 different sets started lol. Theres almost two many options to just pick one for me right now. Even as I typed this I just thought of a collection that I also really like the idea of, which is having 1 coin from each of the different provences symbolizing the power and reach of the empire.
Honestly the more I think about it the more I want to expand out into other ancient coins as well. I am a sucker for any type of ancient military coin or imagery especially roman legion. The modern military commem coins are actually what got me interested and started in the hobby in the first place.

Quote: I am a sucker for any type of ancient military coin or imagery especially roman legion Well, you are in the right place to collect Roman military coins. We just had a discussion of the Marcus Antonius Legionary Denarii not long ago. Take a look at this thread: https://goccf.com/t/116863

Part of the fun of collecting ancient coins is attributing them, and if you buy coins that are already cleaned and identified, you're missing out on a key part of the hobby. Forvm (mentioned earlier) luckily has a section of partially-cleaned coins which have not been attributed and sell rather cheaply. Or you can find a reliable seller of uncleaned coins ( ebay seller oldcoinman has been my favorite, although I'm not sure if he's still in business, and there are certainly other reliable sellers as long as their ads don't state misleading claims like "gold found"). Don't expect to find more than fairly common bronze coins amongst the cleaner lots, although I've found two silver-washed coins, several bronzes that appeared almost uncirculated, and a billon about 400 years old from Constantinople.

Thank you for the link. I am now officially hooked on the legionary series. I am now thinking that my first purchase should be a special one from this series. I am strongly considering the coin below http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/tomce...Product=1781Obviously not every coin will be able to be that good or expensive, but now I think I want the first one to be special. Can you or anyone else confirm the coin is real and or if that is a reasonable price for it?

Wow, the price tag is something else though. I think you can do a lot better then that price, but my, my, that is a beauty. Without looking I think you will be able to find a very nice Legionary Denarius for under two hundred. Maybe not as nice as this one, but pretty darn nice. Impatience is what drives the price up. Bide your time and the right coin will come along at the right price. OR, if you just have the bug, go for it.

Hmmm so after searching around for a while it does seem that price may be a bit high but I havent been able to find a comparable coin in terms of look and eye appeal (to me at least) and its not to far off what some of the better ones are going for on ebay. Maybe Ill try emailing them a much lower offer and see if I can get the price down

That's a very nice denarius, but I also agree--there might be a nicer one for the money out there. Buying ancients takes me a lot more time because I never find an identical group of any one type to judge by price alone. There are a lot of variables to consider which is why I need to see at least a dozen candidates first. If you're not completely sold on this coin, I would wait...because patience always pays off!

Well put! This is the feature that attracts me most to ancients. We may all differ on exactly what we see in a coin and can find coins that fit our personal desires. There are so many factors to consider that it is not always easy to say which of wo coins is the better and which should be left behind but that is the hobby as I know it. Few ancients can be described properly with a couple letters or some numerical rating.

This seems to be the biggest adjustment difference between the ancients and moderns and the area where I will struggle the most in the sense that no two coins are a like and it makes it hard to compare pricing. The coin itself and the look I am in love with, the price of it not so much. Looks like some more searching may be in order
