I would go with a counterfeit - but a very interesting coin, nonetheless. I wonder if it's in Riddell's - Swamperbob should be able to help...

The eagle's wings look all wrong, the snake looks wrong, the rays extend too far, the mint mark looks wrong, I'm fairly sure there should be an R after the 8. I've never seen a Mexican coin like it. Maybe it's an old fake?

I agree that it looks wrong but it could still be made of silver because it looks as it has had quite a few cuts on it to test the silver content so even if its a counterfeit it could still be the same weight as a original and made with the same content of silver. But swamperbob is the one I would go to with any question I would have of any authenticity of just about any coin especially these spanish coins

Guys - this is a Fantasy issue. It falls into a class of coins that is so wrong that it is hard to believe that anyone thought it was real.

It is FANTASTIC. I have a snipe bid on it. I am wondering just how many of my friends have seen it and where the bids will go.

Well - I just won the coin for only $26. I think that is good because I believe it is old. It is one of the crudest I have ever encountered, but the blundered legends are rather typical.

Well, the coin arrived today.

It is in my opinion a struck contemporary that did circulate. The edge design matches known counterfeits listed in Riddell so it must have been made before the Civil War. It is most likely German Silver and is the correct weight allowing for the test cut. The edge was applied with a two die edger like the originals but the pattern is a forgery. It is surprising to see such a well done edge coupled with such a terribly crude eagle.

The cut at 9:00 on the cap side is a square test cut, done to sample the metal content.

All in all a very nice one as far as I am concerned.
