In case you didn't know, I have this thing for late Roman AE4's of emperors after Honorius. So a decent Zeno has been high on my "to obtain" list for a while, and I purchased this one. The coin isn't exactly pretty, but it's a lot better than most of the other coins of him I've seen around the internet. Interesting fact about Zeno: he was Eastern Roman emperor and his reign saw the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD.
My-Latest-Pickup:-Emperor-Zeno

I've attributed it as RIC 958cf.

I also like the late small AE4's. This is a nice coin, I don't have any of him. Hope to find one someday.

That's an interesting coin--the details are clear even if it's a bit crude, but that's how these late empire coins are--right? I'm intrigued every time I compare the coins from the "12 caesars" to the later empire--the craftsmanship really slipped.

That's a pretty nice coin for Zeno. His are hard to find in any condition above awful, so you have done well. Is it me, or does it look like the obverse is quadruple struck? It seems like there are a lot more noses and chins than there should be!

It really is amazing how you can almost see the decline of the empire through their coins

I saw a few lately with decent prices in that era. Problem is that I am flat broke right now. Oh well. lol

Thanks for all the comments guys!

Yeah, I'm still amazed that they went from the artistic-looking, really nice coins from the 1st and 2nd century to these poorly-made tiny coins (but I'll admit, the gold coins from this era aren't bad-looking).

Didn't notice it before but now I see it. I'll just have to have it in hand to be able to tell (if I'll be able to, since the coin is so small!)

Received it today. A pretty nice coin in hand, exactly as shown in the seller's photo. As for the "quadruple strike", it just looks like wear to me.

Really enjoying seeing these 'later Romans' Valiant, seems to be a interesting and under collected area

Thanks Bobby. Yeah, they are an overlooked bunch, 5th century Romans. I collect any Roman that catch my interest, but these tiny late Romans are some of my favorites to collect.

Seriously, a "4mm" coin?

=> wow, that's pushing the ol' Roman envelope a bit, eh?

... man, I have a hard enough time keeping dimes from escaping my pockets and they're "18mm"!! (a dime is more than 4 times as large as this AE4 coin!!?) ...

ValiantKnight => do "not" sneeze, or you might lose that wee lil' Zeno beauty forever!!

Oops, guess I should have included the size in the original post! It's actually 9mm wide. AE4 is just a term to describe any Roman coin under 17 mm.
