I haven't seen either in circulation yet. But both are for sale on ebay. Probably from rolls.

Hi there. I've received three zincs in change within the last two weeks.

Hi, Have found both in change and also have 1 roll of each. Took a lot of asking at each store I have visited. A lot of strange looks when I pulled out the magnet to check.

Where can you get the rolls?

1-Price Smart Foods 1-Timmy's 1-IGA Try asking if they have any rolled pennies to spare, preferably the ones wrapped in clear plastic.Very few people know what a mint wrapper roll of coins are or even what they are worth.

I like to collect Canadian coins, but I don't know much about the 2012 cents. Are there any design or color differences between the magnetic and non-magnetic?
I have a few rolls that are in plastic, and I put a small magnet up to it and it doesn't stick. So here are my questions.
Would any magnet stick if they were the steel cents? I tried it through the plastic and at the end, so are they non-magnetic then?
Which is more rare?
If I have all non-magnetic, I'd be willing to trade for magnetic ones. I can make a post in the trade section for it.

Quote: I like to collect Canadian coins, but I don't know much about the 2012 cents. Are there any design or color differences between the magnetic and non-magnetic? Not that I can see. Quote: Would any magnet stick if they were the steel cents? Absolutely. Quote: Which is more rare? I hesitated to answer this question, because the last time I discussed coins using the term "rare", that thread was hijacked and trolled... but, the short answer to your question is, neither are "rare", or rather, both are abundant. I found that the earlier boxes (February) were magnetic and the later boxes (mid-April) were non-magnetic.

You are correct. Neither are rare, so let me rephrase it then. Which has a lower mintage?

I found my first 2012 today, and it was Zinc. My only steel 2012 is sitting in a mint set!

wquinn: Mintage data is usually not available to the public until the following year's annual report. Perhaps we might know sooner because of the early stop to the cent's minting.
I suspect one or both versions of the 2012 cent might turn out to be "low" mintage.

Anyone find any magnetic ones to trade? I posted a request in the trading section to trade some for non-magnetic. Please PM me if interested.

I also have 2 non magnetic rolls available to trade magnetic rolls and I live in Vancouver. If anyone has magnetic 2012 penny rolls available for trade and lives in Vancouver, please feel free to PM or email me. Thanks.

So why did the RCM make both types of cents? Isn't the steel one (magnetic) cheaper to make? So why would they still make the zinc (non-magnetic) then? I think this has been ongoing since around 2000? So it is kind of strange that they would make both types, especially if there is a big cost difference in them.

I don't think the production costs are that drastically different.
When considering base metal price fluctuations and planchet availability from suppliers, I can imagine a scenario where both types get made.
By the way, I'm getting the sense that magnetic is rarer so far in 2012. So sign me up for that trade too! While we're at it, will anyone send me gold for an equal weight of silver?

I still haven't seen a 2012 penny here on the east coast in change or CRH. I had to go Montreal for a couple of days to see 2012 nickels and dimes in my change.
With regard to minting both CPZ and CPS pennies in one year - maybe for the last few years they had excess stock or some agreement in principle to buy so many planchets from suppliers?
