the 1847 Gothic Crown type coin - are there two variations of the coin, one which you can see the JM if you tilt the coin from top to bottom, and another type you can see the JM if you tilt the coin from left to right?
I heard this information, and would like to confirm it.
I cannot find anything about this type of varieties.
In my understanding you are not supposed to see JM no matter how you tilt the coin. Johann B.Merlen designed the reverse of the "young head" crown. The gothic one was done by William Dyce (and the obverse for both was designed by William Wyon).
