Yesterday I bought a RCM sealed roll of the new 2012 bronze and nickel multi-ply plated steel loonies at a grocery store in Montreal:

Db-On-New-2012-Loonie

As expected, all are magnetic, weigh between 6.24-6.30g and none have rotated dies. The highest grade I found was maybe MS-64 (most range from MS62-63). Then I noticed something:

Db-On-New-2012-Loonie

Not just one or two but ELEVEN out of 25 in my roll have an identical die break on the 'D' in Canada:

Db-On-New-2012-Loonie

And out of those 11 about 9 have a continuation of the break towards the right of the 'D':

Db-On-New-2012-Loonie

The DB on the right of the 'D' varies in length so I would conclude that this die started to break on the left of the D and grew along a line towards the right.

Has anyone else seen this and does the DB continue up to the last 'A' in Canada or beyond?

Hi malibu

On my 2012 loonie the die breaks run from left of the C, through the C, up to the beads, then down to the first A, as well as from the D up to the beads and then down to the last A. There is also one long die crack, or more properly, a series of die cracks linking all the letters in DOLLAR, as well as die cracks leading from the D and the R down to the beads and from the D and the R up to the bottom water line. And then there are 2 die cracks leading from each upper tip of the water into the beads as well. Check out your coins for obverse doubling as well; I picked one up in change that had the entire obverse doubled. Looks to me as if we're going to see a lot of errors on this new 2012 loonie.

When the coin is first designed, error is really common. Sometimes the price for coins with no errors would even be more than the ones with errors.

The coin pictured has a die crack not a die break.Big difference between the two.See the glossary on this site for explanation.

I can believe that, Petersun. I've had 12 2012 loonies come through my hands so far -- all error coins, no "perfect" ones.
