In this country of course. We never had silver nickles and I've never been a big fan of pennies.

If you're only looking for silver, then dimes by far..

It's been a very long time since I got a silver quarter in change, I got a silver dime last week...I was very happy. So I'm also going to say dimes have a far higher likelihood.

Silver nickels in Canada? That's extremely rare.

MercuryDime, We did have silver nickels a long time ago.

I have found many silver dimes and only 2 silver quarters while roll hunting, so I'll have to say dimes are more plentiful. I've almost got my 60's completed just by roll hunting.

middross, they were called "fish scales" and were extremely small [smaller than a dime], my dad has one. Because of the huge difference in size between them and nickel 5-cent coins, I'm not going to bother.

As for dimes, did 6 rolls of $5 each, and found one from 1965! :D Not bad for my first time ever.

Pretty lucky. I was roll searching pretty heavily early last year and I was averaging 2 silver dimes per box (2500 coins or 50 rolls)

Compare that to my average of 1 silver quarter per 10000 coins..

Haha, yeah, it's nearly impossible with quarters now it seems :( and we can't do half dollars here because we changed the size

I have one but I only use it for 1968's [the 99.9 percent nickel ones are magnetic of course but 50/50 silver/copper aren't], the lustre of a silver coin is different, and the chime. I also look through each date or portrait individually, as I have the possible portraits of the Queen and earlier monarchs that would be on 1968 and earlier coins in memory [Our Queen has had 4 different portraits on our coins I think].

Just out of curiosity, what province are you all in?

Ive had decent luck with quarters, my first box of $500 yielded a 1967 silver cougar, and my 3rd or 4th box had a 1964, all great condition. I did $250 in dimes, nothing. I think I will stick with quarters for now until I get tired of those.

I've just started collecting again, and roll hunting for the first time. I've done a box of pennies and a box of nickels so far, but figured I wouldn't find silver dimes and quarters. I'm headed to the bank after lunch - think I'll pick up a box of dimes and see what happens!

Mercurydime, I have a 1911 fishscale. You are quite right that they are VERY small. And yes you are right, Elizabeth II has had 4 different efigies. 1953-1964, 1965-1989, 1990-2003, 2003-present. 2003 was an odd year as the RCM used 2 different effigies of Elizabeth II.

coingirl, I look at the date on the coin when roll hunting. If the obverse is facing up, then I can eliminate the coin if it has one of the recent efigies. anything 1968 I use a magnet to be sure, but you can usually tell be the look of the coin.

I received a 1964 silver 25c in change this morning, from my Starbucks...
