Does anyone know what this is? I bought it with a lot of Japanese coins, but can't seem to find it in my SCWC.

Its a chinese cash coin. I can see the BOO symbol on one side if it. The BOO symbol is the snake looking symbol on the left hand side of the second picture. I had a good website for looking all of these symbols up but can't seem to find it. If I find it again I will post it here.

Found it. It's a really good website for learning chinese cash coins.

I need to make sure to re-bookmark this site again.

From the looks of yours it is Peking Mint for the Board of Revenue. That symbol is located on the same side as the BOO symbol, the second pic. After boning up on it again the BOO symbol just stands for coin and the other symbol on the right hand side is the mint mark. The opposite side usually has the value on it but I haven't deciphered that one yet. It will be hard as the pic is kind of bright and it is hard to read the symbols. I will put it in my photo editor and see if I can tone it down a bit to see the symbols.

Sorry snowman, I tried but I still couldn't see the symbols very well. It looks pretty pitted, maybe someone with more experience with these will be able to tell.

At least I got one side for you.

It it nearly identical to this coin from the web page that you gave me except the second character on the top looks more like a greek epsilom:

Yup, it's the Ch'ien Lung emperor (Qian Long in the modern spelling), reigned 1736-1795. The mint is indeed Board of Revenue.

With such a long reign and such widely fluctuating economic conditions, it's not surprising this series is one of the more complicated in the later Empire period. The differently designed top character is nothing out of the ordinary. The main illustration in the 1700's Krause looks much like yours, Snowman.

Thank you both for your replies. I guess I'll have to cave in and buy the 18th century SCWC some time soon. I've been holding off since the last release was 1993 and I was hoping that an updated version would be released soon.
