I'm curious, because I see a fairish amount of these at work (disclaimer because I feel like I say that sentence A LOT: I handle probably about $500 a day just in change), but all over CCF I keep seeing people getting all excited about finding the state park/landmark quarters. Are these super-rare, or something? Should I be yanking them out of my drawer every time one that looks like it's out on its first circulation trip comes through? Or is it just because they're new?

They are new, there aren't that many currently available in circulation (I think a lot of been hoarded already) and -- perhaps most importantly -- they are simply gorgeous!
I set aside each one I find. I don't put it someplace special to hold onto for investment or anything like that -- just in a separate pile on my dresser. Eventually, I'll spend them once I start seeing more of them, but right now I'm still just hoping to find one of each in circulation.
Did I mention how beautiful they are? That is the sole reason I was willing to fork out the premium to buy the five ounce versions (as opposed to just buying an equivalent amount of silver bullion). I just really love looking at them...

Well, there are new designs coming out each year and people like to collect one P and D of each design for their collection. Their mintage is much lower than the State Quarters. Check out their mintages here: http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_min...tion_figuresAnd I bet there would be people that would love to trade for some. I know I would, since I haven't found any 2011 or 2012 quarters yet. Do you find P or D coins? Any that are AU, you might want to save a few, if you want to collect that series and for future trading.

LOL, barryg, I should just save them all for two weeks then and send you a couple of rolls! I first started noticing them because someone in my area has started spending what was very clearly once a State Quarters by-the-roll collection at my store (if I'd wanted it, I could have had every state between 1999 and 2004 in BU or just a hair below it last week), but now I see a lot of what I think are Utah and New Mexico.

They are nice looking coins but with 60-70 million of each made I doubt they will be rare...the Mint also bumped up the last issue (Chickasaw) to 140 million
Nice to collect though...

It doesn't count when combining for both mints though. The mintage should be based upon each mint and not combined. Their mintage is way lower than the State Quarters though. Still not rare, but makes them tougher to find in circulation. Hey Nina. I'm interested in trading some, if you want? Can you please post it in the trading section?

@Wquinn, I live in Arizona, so a lot of what comes through my drawer is D. I'd be happy to keep an eye out for 2011/2012 for you, if you can tell me what parks/states/islands/sacred cacti/etc. I'm looking for; brand-new quarters are super-easy to spot in our change dispensers and, of course, on Wednesdays and Mondays(? I've never understood that one) there is the inevitable stream of people plunking down five or ten bucks in quarters and dimes for gas and cigarettes.

@Wquinn again (y'all are posting so fast!), I'll head on over there and do that. <3
EDIT: Just popped into the trade forum and discovered I haven't been here anywhere near long enough to actually post there. :S I can still pull anything nice I find from my drawer while I wait out the next two months, but I've got 64 days to go. I'm sorry!

Everyone ISN'T hoarding them........ >>>>> ME ! ... I will get mine through the Uncirc., Proof, and Silver Proof sets from the U.S. Mint each year, and with no Satin Finish coins to worry about, that's all I need. But I do understand the love for Ultra-Modern coins. ABSOLUTELY ! And these ATB's are simply S.W.E.E.T. lookin' ..... FAAAARRRRRRRRRR better than the State Qtrs. in "design quality". So yeah, there is an excitement whenever you come across one ! (if you're an Ultra-Modern coin lover/collector) And secondly, for those building "circulation sets"....they'll need the best conditioned ones they can find where and whenever they find em'. And it isn't going to be easy to find all of them from "the wild". Certainly not "BOTH" mints from your particular area. So there's quite the challenge there, for those doing that. But so, if you're NOT an Ultra-Modern coin collector ( which generally has nothing whatsoever to do with "rarity", "premiums in the marketplace", or even "future value", more-so just enjoying the beauty and the fun of the new coins), then you would be troubled by others interest in what you perceive as a value-less coin or series, that should warrant zero attention in the numismatic world. In a "nutshell"......I think that about sums it up ! .....

Ahh, see, that explains it. I think I'm a little worn out on "special" quarters, pretty much; I was 11 when the State Quarters started coming out, and I'm 23 now. There comes a point when it's just like "okay, you know what would be special? A non-special quarter."

I'm just waiting for them to go NIFC in the middle of the run.

Quote: I'm just waiting for them to go NIFC in the middle of the run. I doubt that will happen since the quarter is cheap to make and actually gets used. We would need to see the cent and nickel go NIFC first. If they do, then I might reconsider my opinion.

I have to admit that after the first 2 issues of this series I've dropped off and haven't even seen the newer ones yet. Time to visit the mint website! I really do hope the designs are nicer than the State Quarters, which is not to say that they were necessarily bad. There are some I really dig. I think that everyone is tired of seeing George Washington all the time.

No problem, Nina. I can wait. I don't have any of the 2011 or 2012 quarters yet, so all of them would be great.
I do have plenty of the the 2010s though.
