Seen this item on ebay tonight, and it got me wondering. If the 3 1/2 claw was the Canadian die, then how would it end up on proof sets? I would have thought only one mint would have been responsible for the 80,000 odd coins needed? Does anyone know anything about this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/26101688152...t_500wt_1182

Hi Tim, I had never seen or heard of it before it & I think there is another one with a ridiculious buy it now price popped up on ebay, one thing for sure is that it is not the original 3 1/2 claw variety because that is the inside claw,i guess by the bidding some people seem to think it is something special.

I don't know how to even tell what a 3 half claw is?

That's not your typical 3.5 claw. The 1/2 claw is on the wrong side

I reckon if everybody that has a 1981 proof set pulled them out & checked,it would probably be a common thing. The RAM makes all proof & mint decimal sets Tim.

This is a genuine proof coin variety avaliable only from proof sets minted by Canberra mint It differs from Canada 3.5 claws - in this case it is the 4th claw that is missing the top part This coin is now being listed by ebay sellers at $300+ which I belive is not warranted for this coin....but when this happens it draws out sellers wanting to make a quick buck A year or so ago you could buy this coin for less than $50 Incidently, this auction ended at about $140 which I think is still overpriced But the market is determined by buyers perception of scarcity so whilst this is in play people will continue to pay these kind of prices My advise is if you buy a few 1981 proof sets you are very likely to find one of these 1 bought 5 1981 proof sets a few years back and was shocked to discover 2 sets had this missing claw variety I have attached a pic for thise who have never seen on before

Hey Mrcruise, it's probably just my eyes or something but it looks like the 2 in the 20 of your 1981 proof missing claw is stamped in the coin instead of on it. Am I right? Also just looking at the other parts of the image it looks like the ripples are reversed compared to a couple of other proofs I was just looking at...
But after all that it could just be me losing my marbles!!
Let me know, thanks mate.

I recently completed my proof set collection and thought I had a couple of doubles including the 1981. now thanks to your thread I have discovered I have both the normal and 3 1/2 claw how much is this worth?

Yes Robster & OnMyWay8, it does.
I've seen this quite a number of times with closeups of coins. It's just the way the lighting has lit up the coin.
Focus you eyes in the shadow of the bottom left hand side of the 2 (near the dirty bit) and the 2 will become raised.

I think I can see it now haha, my eyes are now stating to strain so best stop for a while. darn illusions it would be good if it was an incused 2....
Have a read of what mrcruise posted and you might get an idea of the claw variety. It helped me understand the 2 half claw varieties..
