My First Byzantine Coin (Happy Mother's Day!!?) Just kidding => I took my wife out for a fancy brunch, then we took our dogs for a lovely walk beside the river and then bought her a nice summer oufit (she seemed very happy, especially considering that we don't have any kids) ... However, I did have a gnawing feeling in my head to investigate Byzantine coins ... and when I investigate, it usually means a good ol' fashioned stevex6 impulse-buy!! NOTE => I freely admit that I know next to nothing about this coin ... but I thought it had nice eye-appeal "and" I bought it from my most reliable dealer ... please comment, good or bad, for as you've come to understand => I seem to like to learn the hard-way!! Justinian I AE FollisDate: Year 32 (558-559 AD) Diameter: 30.7 mm Weight: 17.3 grams Obverse: Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Justinian I, holding globus cruciger and shield. Reverse: Large M. Quote: => $70 Edited by stevex6 05/13/2012 7:44 pm

I don't know. I think you are like an addict. We will have to do intervention soon.
The coin has great detail and like you said, good eye appeal. That's the extent of my knowledge about Byzantine's.

jwh => man, I just went an entire month without buying a single coin ... try to give a brother a break!! NOTE => I've only been collecting these ancients during the past three months, so I am still like a kid in a candy store ... plus, there are far worse ways of spending my liquid-cash (luckily I'm not spending it all at the track, or on crack, or on "stamps"!!) Thanks for the coin comment => Yes, I really think this coin is pretty to look at!!

Thanks jessvc1 ... Yes and it's not only pretty => it is also one of my "largest" coins at a robust Diameter: 30.7 mm Weight: 17.3 grams ... only these three old Greek-coins rival my new Byzantine coin in weight and/or daimeter: => Dionysian Tetradrachm of Maroneia, Thrace => Tetradrachm of Alexander III (the Great) of Macedon => Attic Owl Tetradrachm ... so it is sitting with some pretty good company!!

stevex6:
That's one of the most photogenic Byzantine bronzes I have seen, either in the hand, or pictured.
In this case your impulse to buy has served you well. I wish mine were as rational as that!
Well done!
BTW, I have also recently acquired a tet. of Maroneia. A few of them came onto the market at the same time. The obv. on mine is a little pooer than the average, the rev. quite nice.

Hi sel ... yah, I totally agree => actually, when I first saw it, it kind of reminded my of something from the 1970's ... kinda like I should turn-on my black-light and play some old Santana => "She's a Black Magic Woman ..."

Hi Steve,I love byzantine coins (as I love roman ones) and as you probably know it's difficult find them in good condition. Your coin is in an high state of preservation for these coin's standards, and has a very interesting red violet patina. To have a comparison I put here my Justinian I half follis, with a green patina,if you want tell me what you think.....
