Can anyone tell me something about this note. I have found three of them in the back of a draw where they have been sitting since I purchased them who knows when. they are lettered A through C and do not appear to be signed. They all seem Crisp with no creases or folds though the colour indicates they may have been wet at some time or maybe its supposed to be brown....

That is a canal bank 20$ bill. It is from the Canal Bank in New Orlean's between 1833 to 1844 these are called obsolete notes. The Canal Bank has some very attractive viggnettes on their currency. I found this one on ebay today for just under 40.00 most were never used.

A little more info:

The "A", "B", and "C" are plate positions on the four subject sheet. "A" was at the top of the sheet, "D" would be the bottom position, so this is probably a cut sheet, minus the bottom note.

The aging of the paper is not from being wet. The backs are printed with color inks. These were some of the first color inks used for currency and many formulations were not stable. Direct contact with adjacent sheets has caused the aging. These Canal and Citizens Bank remainders were stored in large stacks for many years before being thrown out by the bank around the 1960s-70s. -Russell Kaye, Sellitstore

Thanks Russell
my wife tells me she gave D to my mother in law last year as she lived in the New Orleans Area.
Its a nice bit of history so I think I will hang on to them for a while.
