Got these in the mail today, 1988 holey dollar and dump. The dollar is toning on the rim golden to purple and the dump is toned almost to the centre of the coin colours go from gold, pink, purple and turquoise. Must be some sort of damage from the packaging. I have another of these from 1989 without any toning whatsoever Has anyone else come across this with these coins

It seems that these coins may tone badly over time, due the the packaging.
Keep a watch over them. If you don't like the direction of developments, you may have to consider taking them out of the packaging, and cleaning them with acetone, in the hope that it may remove bad discolouration, then put them into screw acrylic capsules.
The downside is that some value may be lost without the original packaging, and a different storage system would be required for the capsules.

I never leave any coin in its original packaging/slab Sel I doubt that acetone will remove this toning but I will remove them and put them in 2x2's to stop any further damage, the toning hasn't got to the UGLY stage yet so I will keep these as something a little bit different

Is packaging the problem or has a previous owner had it out of the packaging & handling it with bare hands ? Personally if I owned it & I was sure that it was the packaging causing the toning i'd probably leave it in the original packing to see how much it toned over time.

It has a range of colours on it but my skills with a camera are sadly lacking I'm a wizard with a fly rod but when it comes to taking pictures...........well that's a whole different kettle of fish

yep , I just got mine out and looked at them too, looks like one of mine is starting to go that way only on the dump , the dollar is ok so far, but the packing is all starting to go brown like old age paper looks , but I dont like the idea of unpacking them , so I think I will leave them as is , as for taking pictures of them , the light reflects of the plastic covering pretty bad , but I will try and get the best I can to show you .anyway if they still turn bad , I believe the silver contents will give me my money back . i got mine on tuesday 7/2/1989 at $44 each in brisbane at taylors . adelaide st .. kel ..

I spent $100 and got the 1988 and the 1989 coins. The 88 coins were housed in a thick cardboard slab with plastic film either side. I am sure that there is something in the cardboard that tainted the coins both the dollar and the dump are affected. The 89 coins however remained in pristine condition as they were housed in thin plastic flips set into a little wallet set up. I can only assume that the coins in the 1988 packaging will continue to deteriorate as time goes by
