Hi, I recently bought about 40 rolls of pennies from a buddy of mine that he got from his grandfather that were rolled in the late 70s for $1 per roll. I just found out that my stepfather has a box of about 150-200 rolls in his closet. They have the same style wrappers as the coins that I bought from my buddy. I opened one roll and the newest penny I saw was 1980 and a few 70's with original luster, looked "BU" My question is what should I offer him for these? He is not a collector at all. I'm not even sure why he has them. He was not home to ask him about them. If he just didn't get around to taking them to the bank for the past 30 years and is happy with face value.. then great :) but what do you think the most I should pay for them would be? I obviously have the thought of 69s DDO, 72 DDO, 70s sd in my head. He just definitely has that "hoarder" mentality and I was curious what you all think would be the top dollar per roll that I should offer if he doesn't want to come off of them :) Thanks :)

jeez.
its hard to break it to someone like this, but I would only offer face or slightly above, maybe .75-1.00 per roll.
now are the rolls shotgun rolled? where you see both ends open and a coin is showing? or are they just wrapped in paper with closed ends? because if they are the shotgun type, I would wait for guy on here with the greysheet to give you the bu/ask spread for original bank rolled cents. it might be higher...

It sounds like these are mixed date put togetther rolls from circulation and not BU solid date rolls. Is that right?

I would offer $0.75/roll, mostly to be nice.

If they are all pre-1982, which appears to be the case, there are many people on ebay who will pay above face for the copper value. Looks like the going rate for those is about 1.7x face value

Are they sold date rolls? If so, I think they'd be worth more. Particularly the big dates like '72, '70-s, etc.

I'm guessing these are not all BU rolls. They sound like just regular, bank or hand wrapped rolls. If so, 75 cents per roll would be fair, as long as there's hope of finding some BU coins in them.

Hi, Thanks for the replies. They are all hand rolled rolls. I only spot checked one so far but they all appear to have the same older style wrappers. I would spot check a few more before offering any type of premium. 75 cents seems fair to me. Especially being they should most likely be all copper.
