Ive been lurking on the forums for quite some time finally decided to sign up. Bought this coin at the coin shop. The 8 looks like it might have been rubbed off. Then I started thinking that for a coin this small how could such a small area be rubbed off? Does anyone think I should send this coin in to be mint error graded? Not discounting the fact that someone 30 years ago might have artifically manipulated the coin.

I know that fakes of these exist.
I know that jewelers copies of these exist, in good quality gold.
I know that these coins can be a bit weakly struck.
I know that is is possible that it could have been Struck Through Grease.

Weight it.
Examine it, with at least a 10x loupe, and closely compare with a known genuine coin. Closely examine the edge of the coin, and compare with a known genuine example. Look for unexplained die variation, and surface texture.
Take it to a coin dealer, who knows his stuff with these.

This would be a Type II dollar (congratulations). The type II increased the diameter of the dollar but retained the high relief head on the obverse. There just wasn't enough metal there to both fill the head and the date on the reveres so these coin will very frequently come with the center two digits of the date weak or even missing. A strong date on a type II would be grounds for questioning authenticity. It should still be checked carefully as the type II dollars are second only to the three dollar golds for being the most counterfeited US gold coins.

I agree with Conder, the weakness of the strike causes the date to appear faint and it is generally an indication that the coin is genuine. Type 1 dollars are often found with weak strikes as well. I've seen some dealers under grade them significantly thinking that the weakness is due to wear.

I agree with the above. It's just weakly struck. But cool find, though!

Weak strike. It is very common in those one dollar gold peaces. If it is real, which I presume it is because of the weak strike, 78 doLLArs in gold or 180 since is appears to be in vF condition.
