Sounds like you hit quite the jackpot with all that silver. From what I can tell, it does not appear to be counterfeit. Unless it is a result of the lighting, I don't think the surfaces are original. They appear just too red for a coin that is worn. A coin like this should still be certified. I would guess they would give it AU-50 details/cleaned.

It was weird, shopping that one around today, took it to 5 dealers. One was certain it was counterfeit. Two said it had been cleaned. One offered me 2K, and the other said "it's real, get it slabbed".

DEFINATELY get it slabbed, no brainer, especially if you want to sell it. There's a good number of fake 55 doubled die cents out there. Sorry, based on the pictures I'm still having doubts....I hope I'm wrong.

I would say it's easily an AU-53. As to authenticity I'm no expert so will leave that to those with more knowledge on the matter.

If he sends it in to get graded and it turns out to be fake, would they send the coin back to him or destroy it ?

My understanding is that if it is deemed a fake, NGC will send it back unslabbed and labelled "Not Genuine".

Quote: If he sends it in to get graded and it turns out to be fake, would they send the coin back to him or destroy it ? They send it back. It's his coin, they cannot destroy it. There's a difference between COUNTERFEIT and FAKE. A counterfeit is an attempt to make money and pass it in commerce. A fake is one "one-off" attempt to trick someone into thinking a coin is something it's not. AFAIK, creating a fake error or variety and possessing it is not illegal.

That is one amazing coin. I would love to own one some day.
Did you know that the cases were filled with silver coins before buying them?

Not saying that your is counterfeit, from the ANACS website on "Counterfeit Coins"; "...If we are absolutely certain that a the coin is a counterfeit or an alteration, pursuant to federal law and in accordance with our legal obligations we reserve the right to turn the piece over to the U.S Secret Service. The Secret Service's standard procedure is to contact the current owner and the previous owner and have the previous owner return the purchase price to the buyer. The Secret Service's ultimate goal is to trace the coin back to the original perpetrator."

If I had this coin, and it turned out to be fake, I'd hope they'd return it to me, so I could plant it into a roll, sit down with my dad, and watch him do backflips!
