What is your take on the two?
Platinum seems to have been taking a harder hit than gold, but should it really be this low? I mainly deal with silver so do not know much on the subjects, but am looking into which is the better long term investment between the two (opinionated of course). Thanks

If I had the means in big numbers, I may have to consider say for example to get 5 oz. of platinum right now, IF I could find a price that relates to current spot which is never easy with platinum, before I would get 5 oz. of gold....

Don't get me wrong I love gold an more importantly its trusted by the masses, but platinum is so rare an sought after I can't believe it is not a smart buy right now, again if one could find the deals relative to spot. To do that Provident metals or somewhere would be the time to get a 1 oz. platter or a bar perhaps, an may get it not far above spot, as I have deals like 40 bucks over spot on 1 oz. platinum coins, all be it not as of late anyhow....

I would think that once the economy stabilizes in the next 5-10 years, platinum will once again be well above gold in value. So I agree that some Platinum is a smart choice.

I personally am buying both.

Hawk I am with you, I currently do not have the funds for either, but I can coin roll hunt for silver and go to my shop to switch it for bullion. So I am thinking of saving my other funds for 1-2 years down the road to buy some gold/ platinum. Just wanted some honest opinions

There is some history on this that bears exploring. Only a few times in the past 50 or so years has the price of Au exceeded that of Pt. When it does, there is usually about a 60% rise in the price of Pt during the 2-3 years following this price inversion. The rest of the time, Pt prices are comfortable above that of Au, although not as much as Pt's rarity would suggest. Pt and Pd are of similar rarity and are produced in about 1/12th the amount as is Au. So far this year, that equates to 24M oz. of Au and 2M oz. each of Pt and Pd.

I would like to buy some Pt but the premiums that most places charge bring the Pt coin prices up close to that of gold. Not sure if that premium can be recovered or not because the "we buy" prices on the APMEX and Provident web sites show a considerable difference with the "we sell" price... usually double or more than for gold.

I agree that gold is immediately recognized by most people who buy and sell metals, so it is easily sold. Pt, OTOH, looks like silver so its true value might not be appreciated as readily. It is quite a bit more dense than silver, so a 1-oz. Pt coin will be smaller than a 1-oz. silver coin.

Both Pt and Pd look like copper nickel alloy to me. Pd is around the density of lead, Pt around the density of gold.

In my opinion, I think it's a great time to buy platinum... I love the noble metal because with platinum, ( as a rule ) you don't have to worry about carbon or copper spots. That really bugs me. When you see a .999, .9999 or even a .99999 solid gold piece having carbon or copper spots. I do love though the $20 saint Gaudens as well as the $20 liberties, Even though a good deal , Especially the $20 saints do have carbon spots. Remember to always look over your coins very well with at least a 10x magnifier to get a general idea. I love the platinum fortuna's sealed in its hard plastic with the C.0.A. on the back... Great piece with higher premium. I also like the Platypus and Platinum eagles...

People are moving away from platinum in catalytic converters and substituting less expensive metals. Not sure what this does for long-term price outlook.

I'm still pro-gold at the moment. I don't feel that the world economy has bottomed out yet. Until it does, gold first.

Without betting one way or another, I figure I can start buying platinum when platinum levels with gold. I'd by Pt then to profit on the rising Pt/Au ratio. For now, Au when I can afford it.

TBH, I think gold is over valued right now.

Silver and palladium is where its at.

Interesting thought. How did you come up with this? I would be interested in your reasons. Most of what I read on the Internet suggests that gold is undervalued in US dollars and should be quite a bit more expensive.
