Thanks I bought this for $2.55 I cleaned it a little. It's corroded and this is about the best I could do.

it looked like it would turn out better but I'm glad to see how the reverse looks. I can't make out the mint mark but it looks like the last 2 letters HT or MF. I noticed on some of my coins Jupiter had a face but on a couple it just looked like dots. The dots are very clear on this reverse.

I cleaned this coin with a toothbrush and toothpicks with Lots of scrubbing. It was a greenish color but some of the metal started to show so I put some dellers darkener on it.

Thanks jessvc1,
So using a dip is ok? Like on Large cents, covering open Bronze color or evening out the color of the whole coin/

Depending on the condition of ancients, sometimes you have to clean them.

On modern coins it's usually different, since they where minted not as long ago and there are usually a large amount of coins available in original color or not harshly cleaned, most modern coin collectors want a coin that is not artificially toned or cleaned. But reading the threads in the USA coin forum I think people buy more artificially toned/cleaned coins then they realize. For silver blast white is also a sign of being dipped. I collect ancients now but I did my experimenting with USA coins too just so I could spot the differences. I don't worry about those things as much now.

You're right, jessvc1 => I don't always trust blast white coins ... I'd way rather see a nice rich, toned coin ... My favorite "modern coin" is my 1893 Canadian quarter (only 100,000 minted) ... I absolutely love the eye appeal of this coin (I may have shown this coin already? ... sorry if I did ... my memory is definitely goin' lately)

That's very nice Steve--I prefer toned silver anyday over blast-white.

Thanks ... Yah, I personally think that Canadian money has been and still is some of the prettiest currency (sure, maybe I'm a bit prejudice, but I've also heard it from a few non-Canadians as well) ... => anyway ... this is an ancient thread, so I should probably just keep my opinions in my pipe and smoke 'em, eh?!!
