These are two Philippine 1 Piso coins. The one one the left is 1985 and the the one on the right is 1990. From 1983-1989 these coins are supposed to have "larger legend and design elements" and from 1989-1990 they're supposed to have "smaller legend and design elements."

Aside from the 1990 coin having a significantly thicker rim, I can't tell any difference in font size or anything else.

Other than the thicker rim, are there any differences here? Or does having a thicker rim automatically mean that the legend must be smaller?

the rims are a bit thicker on the obverse of the 1990 coin, but not at pronounced a difference as the reverse. Other than that I can't see any difference.

I don't see anything that would call for a different type, even .1 to .3

I wonder if it is another of Krause's flukes. Don's World Coin Gallery puts all pisos 1983 - 1990 into a single type.

I think a case could be made for calling one "thin rims" and the other "thick rims." I have a large type 1989 and it has the same thick rims. If they called it that, I think I could easily tell the difference between, say, two 1989 varieties. It's just the "legend" and "elements" wording that throws me off.

Thanks. You might release it to wikipedia. they seem to be having problems getting a photograph of it and the Philippines evidently doesn't have laws preventing copyright of coinage like other countries....whatever.
