I'd like some advise on whether to clean the coins in my collection?
Or should they be left as is? Will cleaning damage old coins or lessen their worth at all?

If OK to clean what's the best method?

NO!

Now, having said that, there are certain specific cases where some sort of treatment, most especially to arrest an ongoing deterioration of the coin, might be warranted. In no instance would such treatment involve touching the coin with anything save some type of liquid. As you might imagine, this is a topic we cover frequently and in great depth - it's a very common question from new collectors, rightly so, and also a rather divisive topic among more experienced ones. We have fun with it.

Please have a go with our Search function, and you'll discover a large body of information argued from both sides of the coin, so to speak. You'll find me to be one of the more liberal here on the subject, and the first thought from even my liberal viewpoint is not to clean a coin unless it is absolutely the lesser of two evils.

Oh, by the way, welcome to Coin Community. I had intended to drop in to your Welcome post, but I decided to stop here first. I'm SuperDave, co-Moderator and Forum Longhair.
