hi all,
I've ran into a few uncleaned coins from the same batch that seem to have an oily tar-like grime on them. it just looks like the usual coin grime but when I pull them out of their distilled water bath they have a weird feel, and if I look carefully at the coin, I can actually see little beads of water forming (like on a newly waxed car). a total bugger to get off. on a cull I tried some degreasing agents (tire cleaner!) and it came off pretty good. any idea why these coins would have tarish stuff on them? any idea on how to clean it?
just curious.

That's easy to explain... Some roman dude (with his money bags)was out hunting a tyrannis sauris rex and totally fell in a tar pit man!

Did you try some dish soap? Maybe that would take off the grease. I've noticed this before on several uncleaned coins that I ended up using electrolysis on so I couldn't help you on this. Acetone takes off tar on modern coins.

Sounds like RENWAX. A hot water soak or some acetone should remove the wax.

Another possibility is that the coins were soaked in (olive) oil or another solvent as part of cleaning but not finished. I also avoid coins with a greasy, thick covering.

lol! I was curious is some guy fell in a tar pit.

i did try dish soap, doesn't budge it. I don't think its remwax or anything similar, it very dark and grimey looking. weird stuff.

that could be dougsmit, it could be merged grime and some type of oily solvent. I did notice one looked scratched, like someone had tried to test the metal or someithing.
