So I've been thinking about getting into the metal detecting thing! I know NOTHING about it, other than my great uncle when I was younger occasionally bringing an old radioshack metal detector with us to the beach occasionally, but it would never squeal LOL.

I searched "Metal detecting" on youtube, and watched this...

I may be sold!

I honestly know NOTHING about it, but thought it could be a fun summer outdoor activity.

Any well seasoned detector want to give me the brief rundown?

What do you think are the chances of me finding things in Urban NYC where I live?

I do have a summer house on Long Island right on the beach, ideally I want to find what the guys in this video are finding HAHAHA!

Ok lets hear it!

The internet is great for doing research. I became hooked on "dirtfishing" over 3 years ago, and have dug hundreds of old coins. I've discovered that 80% of users will hang up the detector after one or two outings...You truly have to put in the swingtime and stick to it, the finds will come!

Any suggestions on a starter detector? One that won't make me angry I purchased if in a year I too hang it up?

I can't suggest spending less than $400-$500 on a good used model that keeps it's resale value, like Minelab, or Whites. If you find later that you don't care for the hobby, you won't be out $. Check places like Craigslist, do your research.
