VisigothKing Pillar of the Community United States 4778 Posts	Posted 06/01/2012 10:41 am For a while I was looking for a decent forward-facing Roman coin for my collection and when I came across this one being offered by one of my favorite sellers I knew this Arcadius was it. This coin will be my first with this bust type. Arcadius (383-408 AD) AE3 Obv: DN ARCADI-VS PF AVG, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing, holding spear and shield Rev: CONCORDI-A AVGG, Constantinopolis seated facing, head right, with foot on prow, and holding Victory and sceptre, SMN(A or B) in ex, Nicomedia RIC X 91 Edited by VisigothKing 06/01/2012 11:05 am Report this Post to the Staff

dougsmit Pillar of the Community United States 1549 Posts	Posted 06/01/2012 1:39 pm This is a coin that you might need to see several to understand the reverse. Yours is strong on the prow and Victory but rather than the throne details being even, it looks like Victory is on a column besides the Concordia figure. I suggest you shop around for a coin of Honorius or Theodosius with the same reverse from Antioch and see if they do not present an interesting comparison. RIC says they also come from Cyzicus and Constantinople but I don't have those and don't know how the style differs there. There would be many worse coins to build a set out of since the facing busts are interesting. It is a coin worth owning. Report this Post to the Staff
