It looks like it might be something like a seal- for stamping in wax.

I have Googled this item and its legends until I'm blue in the face, and no luck, even with an old reference on Hawaiian tokens. I can say that at one point, wealthy Hawaiian sugar cane growers attempted to start plantations in the Azores in order to produce sugar closer to European markets. Shipping sugar from Hawaii simply wasn't competitive.

You can read various British criticisms of this plan, most of which point out that Portuguese laborers were not suitable for the difficult work, and tended to work a short time then leave the employment. This persistent turnover doomed the enterprise. Having said that, it brings you no closer to an answer, however.
