Anybody heard of or deal with Ubercoins out of Arizona just wondering what their reputation was.

My personal belief is that to locate a honest dealer, you should do the following (this is also good at large coin shows)...

First, when looking over the dealers stock, look for a raw coin that your interested in and ask as many questions as possible, such as, what makes this a grade of _____, I'm new to collecting and want "original" coins as I read stories on the internet about people buying coins that have been cleaned, etc. (you get the idea)...

Second, If possible, wait about a month or so (at coin shows, go to the next show) and ask your friend if he/she can do you a favor and hand him/her the coin, have them go to the dealer where you purchased your coin from (you can view the event from a distance), and have them ask "I have this coin that I know nothing about and was thinging of selling it... Can you look at it and let me know what it's worth"...
After he receives the dealers answer on your coin, have him say "I'll have to think about it, thanks for your time"...

I would bet that his/her information received is alot different then what you were told when you purchased the coin...

Should any other forum members know of another way of finding a honest dealer, please share it with us...

The question is How much profit should a dealer get from a coin. I had a number of coins appraised recently and the dealer graded some of the coins and then valued them at 1/2 of the price listed in the Red Book? This guy was highly recommended and charged me $300 an hour for the written appraisal.
Just saying

300/hr sounds extremely steep.

Why would a dealer use a Red Book and NOT the GRAY SHEET?
What Book or website did he use for grading the coins?
Back in the day when I was dealing in coins, I've had a number of people show me their coins and ask me the grade and what they were worth... My approach was to sit down with them and go over each coin with the PCGS Photo Grade Book and have them compare the coin they had to the photos, after we agreed on the grade, I showed them the Graysheet and mentioned that was the bid and ask price for coin dealers and if I was to purchase their coin/coins, I paid 80& of bid price... I also showed then the latest Coin World weekly price guide (before the monthly price guide) and mentioned that this was the suggested retail value... Most times they didn't want to sell the coin but was happy to know the grade and dealers buying price...

Typo above... Should read "80% of bid price", this is what happens when I type in the dark...

Because it sounds like the customer was paying for a written appraisal for insurance purposes...not looking for an offer to buy..IMO...

I haven't used ubercoins, but I won a couple of scottsdale silver coins on ebay, when I received my coins there was a postcard inside for ubercoins. Guess they are affiliated?
