I have owned this medal when I started collecting coins way back in the mid 90's, at that time frame I was buying in collection lots that interests me. I have sold most of it over the years and only collect what I like today.

The only information I gather is this is from north German states, I am not sure about the composition, but I think it is nickel, weight about 7 ounces, size is approximately 3.75" and over an 1/8" thick, comparing that with the US penny, this I have been using as a paper weight for most of the time. The back is flat, do anyone else have more information about it, and relative value please.

The shield shows the CoA (in a slightly modified version) of the city of Kiel, which is the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein (in Northern Germany). The text around it SECRETUM CONSULU DE KILONE, ie. a "secret" seal of the council of Kiel. (Here is a reference http://www.kieler.info/index.php/ge...te/stadtname except it uses the spelling KILIONE.)

Ortopedia was a company in Kiel that made wheelchairs for example. A couple of years ago it was taken over by Meyra. Why anybody would get such a medal for visiting their premises, I don't know. :)

Thanks chrislid,

Very curious as to why also, and who may have made it.
