Hi guys

Take a look at your 2012 toonies, you will see what looks like clipping but is really the effect of the side rim punching...But it sure looks like clipping.....

do you mind posting pictures of the whole coin (both faces)?

A clip is a cut on the planchet. Knowing how these planchets are made, I think multiple "clips" is not the explanation. If not a PMD, it looks like a strike issue. An image of the whole coin will help.

Ty, as wert said in his original post, these are NOT clipped but "the effect of the side rim punching...But it sure looks like clipping....."

Each indent lines up with a letter on the edge of the coin.

I noticed the same thing when I got my first new toonie. I saw a regular scammer on ebay trying tosell hers for an obscene amount, saying that it was a RARE ERROR TOONIE.

I saw the same ebay ones myself, middross, and thought "what the heck is she thinking?" I've seen a few of those punched rims around and got one in change myself. I'm thinking they must be somewhat common, but I'll be honest, I don't know what's causing the error, or why there are so many punches per coin.

The coin Wert posted is not the new twoonie - it is the old.

In the new twoonie the effect is caused by misalignment of the collar.

I didn't even know the old design was circulating as 2012.

The new toonies do that a lot and sometimes you see it on the steel quarters.

I'm pretty positive that this is a NEW Toonie, as I have one JUST like it. Like I said before, these marks line up perfectly with each letter in the edge of the coin.

I guess wert will let us know if it is the OLD or NEW Toonie, andwe will have our answer.

Old or new any coin and or metal of that thickness will mushroom out from being struck on edge.
Looked at a few myself and that would be normal for being struck, if laser cut would not have that displacement

The link shows the new twoonie. The old one, you are already used to.

Well t_y, guess mine is the NEW Toonie...?

As if that makes a difference...!
I mean a side edge punch would cause the slight clipping effect whether it was the NEW or the OLD Toonie.

New type + edge lettering = ugly rims.

wert, the reason that it makes a difference is that the old style Toonie didn't have lettering on the edge of the coin whereas the new ones do.

You got a valid point there middross...
That would make a difference, but the new type is deformed do to side edge punching and is probably extremely common.
