I was ordering some nice wooden display cases for my 5 ounce ATB silver bullion coins and figured I'd check out their "Daily Specials" section. I saw that they had what they claim to be "exclusive access to the entire mintage of just 25,000 coins directly from the Royal Canadian Mint" of the 2012 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf with the Dragon Privy for a semi-reasonable price of (at the time) $41. Well, I love silver, I love reverse proofs, and I'm particularly fond of dragons, so I decided to go ahead and add one to my order: Ain't it gorgeous? Of course, I just checked and AMPEX is now selling these for only $38 (I swear the price of silver has gone up since I ordered it, not down), but whatever...

I like it; but I guess I'm partial to the original. See the differences?

The original was part of the Chinese Lunar Zodiac Series. The RCM issued a sterling silver $15 face value series in 1998, their first Chinese lunar zodiac coin. The series had yearly issues and ended in 2009 with the year of the Ox. Concurrent to the $15 coin series, the RCM privy marked SML with the same design featured on the $15 coins. Mintage for the privy marked SML differs year to year, ranging from 8000 to ~20000. The dragon privy SML traevin pictured is from the 2000 release, and still features the older, satin-smooth reverse proof finish. The one that barryg got was commissioned by APMEX. i.e. APMEX put in an order to the RCM to make 25,000 of these coins. The RCM can produce privy marked SMLs to order provided you meet the minimum amount. That number is only 5,000 ( I think, if 2004 stats still hold)

You might right be again, Po. I think they both came out in 2000; I had no idea which was released first. But I trust your knowledge on the subject. In truth, I'd forgotten about the $15 RCM lunar series. I have the $15 Dragon pricy, as well. Sorry, bad pic, but here it is. As an aside, I do believe the tulip privy had a mintage of less than 5000. I was thinking maybe 3500, without looking it up. Other than the newest ones, the tulip is one of the few privy coins that has eluded me, so far.

I bought the Rabbit privy mark one a while back. Pretty cool IMO.

Real nice coins being shown here, man I love some reverse proofs.... I feel that frosting surface is so MUCH better then the typical milk spot RCM standard surface.... That is why Perth is so great and RCM needs to go this style more often on all their bullion IMO, via frosted surface accounting for like 85% an 90% of coin surface. They leave little shinny silver for blemishes that always form in time.... Basically what I am saying is the frosting style, or sand blasting how ever they get that effect, will stand the test of time IMO....
