I buy lots of Morgan dollars but I'm real careful becuase of the huge sum of Chinese fakes out there. I just Newley discovered Canadian silver dollars. My question is are the common date ones faked at all. Are they typically safe to buy? And which dates are 80% silver?
Canada made circulation silver dollars from 1935 to 1967 and all 80% silver. Canada also made collector silver dollars starting in 1971 that are 50% silver.
The 1945, 1947 and 1948 dollars are the most commonly faked because of their rarity, but I was surprised to hear common dates (1939, 1958, 1964) that often available for a slight premium above melt value are also faked.
Bad fakes can be spotted by weight. There a good site by the RCMP that details many known counterfeit coins
