Thank you Earle, much appreciated! :)

In fact, this was an ebay purchase, and I was so excited to FINALLY fill that hole, that I truly took photos, didn't inspect the date that closely (as I have an extremely difficult time actually seeing the difference... don't ask!)

At any rate, I have disputed the paypal transaction, and forwarded this to the seller...

I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. I received my mint set today in the mail. Not only is it in fact a LARGE DATE, but it is also an entirely different item than the one pictured in your listing.

You went above and beyond to explain the differences between large and small date in your messages to me. All of which I already knew, and had made me feel much more confident that I was dealing with a reputable seller.

I removed the penny, put it into my album, and compared it to the 70-S large date that sits right next to that spot. I was BEYOND myself to learn that it is not what I purchased from you.

I have disputed this with paypal. Please advise how you would like to proceed.

I have not left any feedback, and see you have done the same. I am not here to further tarnish anyone's reputation, but expect an honest, and good faith resolution.

Thank you,
Joseph

Sorry about your luck.

NEVER open a dispute right way! Give the seller a chance to correct the situation FIRST. Only do to a seller what you would want done to you if the roles were reversed. Maybe the seller made a mistake, give them the benefit of the doubt at first. Any good seller will take care of the situation.

I say this because I've been shafted on ebay by a guy that never paid me. He left me a negative after HIS paypal checks bounced THREE times. The sad part is that ebay wouldn't remove the neg no matter how unfair it was.

Thad I completely agree, and I've been on the end of it that you speak about
As well, although never in a numismatic sense. I am always one to want to work it out. To clarify, feedback hasn't been exchanged yet, however to read His prior messages to me, you'd agree this wasn't as much a confusion as it was a sales tactic
At my expense.

Opening a dispute before you even contact a seller to resolve the issue is a really good way to get on the seller's bad side and will make resolution to the situation much more difficult.

Uh oh, I think this is going to cause you some problems here- you essentially destroyed most of the value of the Mint Set by removing a coin and it can no longer be sold as a complete Mint Set. That would be the equivalent of buying a slabbed coin, cracking it out of the slab, and then wanting to return it- it is no longer what the seller sold to you.

Strictly playing devil's advocate here, and I'm in no way accusing you of doing this, but, he can easily say that you just switched out the small date, for a large date, and that you're trying to pull a fast one since you took it out of the Mint Set.

I don't think that's the case at all, because you posted it on here simply looking for a grade on your new purchase, and found out that way. But I can see PayPal having issues with siding with you on this one (if it gets to that). Hopefully you don't need to escalate it and let PayPal decide, and that the seller genuinely was mistaken and works with you.

Keep us informed.

I see the seller started a thread about this on another forum. At first he thought you were scamming him. Had the whole forum ready to block your ebay user ID. He then admitted his mistake and things cooled down.
