After many months of searching and waiting, I now have a siliqua of my own, of Emperor Honorius. This is my most costly coin so far. I could have settled on a cheaper clipped one, but my only condition was that it had to be non-clipped, and luckily I found and won this one. The only downside is that I probably won't see it until after I get back from vacation .

Honorius (reigned 393-423 AD) AR Siliqua

Obv: DN HONORIVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right
Rev: VIRTVS ROMANORVM, Roma seated left with Victory and holding inverted spear with hook, MDPS in ex, Milan (my first Roman coin from this mint)
RIC X 1228

You are one siliqua ahead of me. And not a bad coin at all. Congrats.

Nice coin indeed. I don't have a siliqua either. Maybe one day, if I ever start making more money.

Well of course very few of us have a Siliqua in "our" collections => it's because that dude, Siliquae, has all of them in "his" collection!!

Ummm okay, I admit that I can be kinda dense every now and then, and this is definitely one of those times ... ummm, but what actually makes a coin a "siliqua"?

=> is it merely a silver (AR) Roman coin minted in the 4th century? (NOTE: all of the siliqua-examples that I've seen on this thread seem to have been minted between 360-400 AD)

=> yah-yah-yah, I know ... it's probably the 3rd or 4th thread this week associated with this type of coin and I still haven't quite figured-out what I'm looking at!! (*whateva*)

Yeah, siliqua is the modern term given to the thin silver coins minted from the 4th to the 7th centuries. It is copper plated with silver (not sure the exact copper-silver ratio though). Unfortunately many siliquae were clipped on the edges for their silver.

Does anyone know the percentage of silver that siliquae had? Just wondering.

I think I found it, on Wiki's page for the Hoxne Hoard, which included siliquae: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoxne_Hoard
The genuine siliquae were 95-99% silver. Way more than I would have thought.
