My family and I are going to western Pennsylvania next month for a wedding, and I thought I'd swing by the mint on the way back home. Since we've never been, I thought some folks here may can give me some advice/pointers that I may not be aware of. Like: -Is parking a big issue? Any suggestions? -Is the gift shop a rip off or a decent bargain? -Can we take pictures with our kids? -Anything else I might not know to ask about. Thanks!

Parking is difficult in the area closest to the Liberty Bell, you might have to try Race or Vine Sts.closer over to Chinatown, avoid parking under or near the elevated expressway or north of it, the neighborhood gets iffy rapidly. The gift shop is run by Aramark, so there is considerable overhead on souvenirs that can be gotten elsewhere cheaper. They do have decent selection hobby related products, albums, coin tubes, etc. The one saving grace is the sales counter for current US Mint products, exactly like the web catalogue. The salespeople are generally friendly and attentive to collectors and will bring out several coins or sets for the customer to choose from. They stock just about everything, from this year's proof sets to the expensive PM proofs without household order limits. It's a Federal facility, so no pictures allowed. Also you have go through a metal detector, even for the gift store. Oh yes, there should be a quarter exchange machine in the store that has the latest ATB Quarter. Get a couple of dollars worth, one less album hole to fill later. Enjoy!

While you're in the neighborhood, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank (corner of 6th and Arch) has an interesting (and educational) display on money in their lobby called "Money in Motion." They also gave little bags of shredded money to my kids...
Slightly off topic, if you're a foodie, Honey's Sit-N-Eat (located nearby in the Northern Liberties area) was featured on the Food Networks' "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." It certainly is a dive, but the food is fantastic (and pretty cheap).

I live in Philly. When I go to the mint I park on Race Street (between 5th and 4th) next to the mint. Always find a space. I go later in the afternoon. If you're a tourist, park you car below 5th street and walk around. Nothing is far from anything in Center City. The mint tour is nice, the gift shop people have always been pleasant but remember to have a photo ID to get into the mint.

Quote: It's a Federal facility, so no pictures allowed. I don't know if they are strict as they used to be. It used to be you were not allowed to even carry camera in and that meant no cellphone cameras either. And they did NOT have any secure place for you to store your camera or phone. You had to either take it all the way back to your car, or hide it in the bushes and hope it was still there when you came out. For awhile they was a guy who had a business outside the mint renting storage space for your camera and/or phone but I think he either quit or they ran him off.
