His sister made him do it.

Mom mistakenly throws Boy Scout son's life savings away

Twelve-year-old Max Becker has been reunited with his life savings -- money that his mom accidentally threw away with a recycled computer.

"I was so upset ... because it's like all my money," Max said.

Max had just returned from Boy Scout camp when he noticed the central-processing unit of his old computer was gone. Inside, he had stashed a coffee cup and wallet containing more than $300 and some gift cards.

"I was hiding it from my sister, Drew, ... I can't exactly trust her," Max said.

Max's mother, Dorothy Ferrante, started making phone calls and discovered it had been taken to the Sims recycling plant in Edison, N.J.

"I felt terrible. How would we ever get it back?" said Ferrante.

She made some phone calls and ended up pleading for help from the computer recycling plant. They were determined to help a Boy Scout find his money, but they had to dig through about 700 different computers.

It took four days but they found it.

On Wednesday afternoon, Max got his cash back and a tour of the plant.

"Thank you," Max said. "Thank you so much."

NBC 4 New York asked his twin sister, Drew, what she thought and whether she was even a little happy for her brother.

"Is there a shopping trip for me in it?" Drew asked.

"Not a chance," her brother said.

Oh, how horrible. That kid will be searching for a new hidey-hole.I wonder if they would have found it anyway at the recycling plant? They take them apart don't they? I don't think the throw them in a trash compactor. Anyone know?

My neighbor just cleaned out his garage and put all kinds of metal things in the back of his pickup truck. I went with him to a metal recycler and watched as they threw everything into a massive pile which ended up in a massive furnace. Any money in that mess is now ashes.

Yikes! Not the best choice of obscure hiding places, kid.

@Saint Ninian: Old computers are actually physically disassembled by hand. The components inside are valuable when sorted out.

Thanks for the replies, Carl and Argentum. Your replies were quick and helpful to me. I remember an old song from the 40's or 50's about ole' Granny and her ancient, lumpy rocking chair. No one wanted it when she died-- until it was found to contain a fortune in rolled up $$bills Go Granny!

Yes the recyclers would have found it when the disassembled the computer, but most likely would not have known where it came from. So without the call to advise them to watch for it they would not have been able to return it (Unless there were addresses with the gift cards). There would also have been the chance that the employee disassembling the computer may have just pocketed it.
