I told her I should know but I didn't have an exact answer for the meaning of "troy". A google search revealed this:

"The troy ounce is part of the troy weights system, many aspects of which were indirectly derived from the Roman monetary system. The Romans used bronze bars of varying weights as currency ... At 480 grains, the troy ounce is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce, which weighs 437.5 grains "

Maybe "it's what's used to weigh precious metals like gold and silver and is about 10% heavier than an ordinary ounce" would work. Unless she's really into the details.

The troy ounce (oz t) is a unit of imperial measure. In the present day it is most commonly used to gauge the weight of precious metals. One troy ounce is currently defined as exactly 0.0311034768 kg = 31.1034768 g. There are approximately 32.15 troy oz in 1 kg. One troy ounce is equivalent to approximately 1.09714 avoirdupois ounces.

As far as the etymology is concerned, "troy", in the sense of "troy ounce", is assumed to have derived from the name of the French market town of Troyes; in mediaeval Europe, each city and town had its own definition of what a "pound" was, and even different trades and guilds within the same city sometimes had different definitions of a "pound".

Though the name derives from the French city, the actual weight (1 ounce = 480 grains) is Germanic in origin. The "troy pound" ultimately used by England (and subsequently America and the rest of the world) was officially defined and adopted in 1527.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
