So I'm looking at some more proof sets to go into my collection. I now have a 1989 set in the deluxe red leather case, but none of my sets are deluxe sets with 5 pound crown coins.

I'm wondering if there are any big differences in these sets and their blue case counterparts beside the casing. Are the crowns made of silver, for example? Or is the only difference between the two that the case is red leather and not blue whatever they make the blue ones out of?

No difference in coins (that I know).

I think deluxe red ed. were available/issued to subscription customers or collectors who pre ordered.

The only difference is the case.
IMHO Just an upselling marketing strategy.

The red deluxe sets are mo different from the blue sets in terms of coinage, just simply a red leather case. Later sets did include the £5 crown, these were from 1993(?) and issued with the £5 when it was issued (only certain years). From the year 2000 the Mint also bought out an Executive Proof set, from 2000 to 2003 these were packaged in a most unattractive plastic box. But from 2004 onwards the Executive set was housed in a wooden box - much nicer! Deluxe sets are still available though, I couldn't tell you what they are like as we don't collect them!

Buy them on ebay...sellers can't give them away.
