Not new to the Coin World but new here. My main interest through the years has been to keep upgrading my Barber Head Dime collection. I would like to pick up a decent 1883 "V" nickel and found an offering of one (attached) described as being in "Choice AU. I do have some concerns about the presented condition. I have pointed out the areas of concern in the attachment. What do you think?

The photo looks like a very high end AU.

What exactly are you concerned about? I see a normal AU coin with abundant luster remaining. The areas you have circled are a normal part of the reverse design, an ear of corn and a cotton boll.

My concern is that there seems to be more wear (smoother) than I should expect in "Choice AU" condition.

You need to separate wear from strike quality. IMHo the 'wear' your are asking about is a less then optimal strike ... the coin left the Philly mint looking like that.

Note as well the left corn cob in the wreath ... I see very little definition there as well.

Show us a photo of the obverse ... I'm speculating that many of the 13 stars will not show full 6-pedal definition.

I see a high AU coin with average strike quality.

What does the front look like, in particular the hair?

I guess I just wouldn't call a weak strike "Choice"

I would not consider this one a weak strike. Looks like an MS coin that was mishandled.

If you have these concerns about this coin move on to the next. There are many 1883 NC's out there. This is by far the most common high grade coin of the series.

There are many, many, many MS 1883 No Cents out there. Find one you have no concerns about, and for $70 or so you you'll be very happy.

Do you see the lack of definition in several of the stars? There does not appear to be such a level of wear anywhere else on the coin... so by deductive reasoning... weak strike.

Looks like there is just some friction and lots of luster so choice AU looks like an accurate grade.

How much are they selling it for?

It should sell for around $15. Like others have said, there are a ton of them out there at a great cost, since it was heavily saved.
