We found a box of loose coins in a relative's effects, including 13 gold coins in apparently "reasonable" (?) condition, some possibly-valuable silver coins, and some very ordinary ones, probably of face value. My preference is just to make four piles of more-or-less equal value and distribute them to four grandchildren. But we need to know if there are any of real value to collectors. Any advice on how to get approximate values for these coins?
Thanks, Michael Rowe

My advice would be always hold coins by the edge and don't touch the face of coin with your fingers.
Now that's out of the way, take some good close up pictures of your stash, and upload it here for our resident experts here to evaluate.
And never clean them either!

post pics and we will help you determine condition(grade) and rarity(how many made) and values. If you cannot post pics, take them to an ANA member dealer who can appraise them for you. do not sell them to the one who evaluates them, there is usually conflict of interest, but hold off till you are ready...or give them to grand kids knowing what they are worth... DO NOT RUB,BUFF, SHINE THEM UP ,OR TOUCH THE FLAT SURFACES ...hold them by the edge with clean hands...also separate the types of metal because of corrosion risk keep in a dry and well ventilated spot....good luck with your treasure and congrats. to CCF! You should also get a copy of the 2013 Red Book (I believe or Forum Mom has them for sale here). The book will also help you with grades and low mintage identification. Keep in mind that the book is 25%-30% high. Also, completed auctions on ebay is a good way to see what the market will bring.

Thanks for the advice. The person holding the coins only has a cell phone camera. I will try to get someone to take better pictures, and upload them somewhere. Is it better to upload so many pictures here, or to some picture sharing place like Picasa?

upload them here. when you reply to the topic up top on this screen an option will appear for you called the "image optimizer", use that, then load away, as many as you want. cell phone is fine, just dont have them blurry, these experts here only need clear looking shots as a start. also, take head on shots, no angles. look at a few posts of how folks post their pics and do the same.
good luck and nice find!

I have uploaded one set of low quality images taken with a cell phone. I can't get anything better for three weeks, when someone with a better camera and skills returns. There are 13 coins from $2.5 to $20, apparently of the quality shown in the photos, and one that is "heavily worn," whatever that means. What judgments can you make about condition from these low-quality photos? Michael Rowe

2.06 million minted at San Francisco, uncirculated details, based on pics,if genuine, grades MS-63+ = $2500 or more ! which is $1000 over melt value....congrats!

I don't like the sound of "reasonable" condition. That's sounds like AG to me. We really do need more pictures of two sides of each coin because that is what we love.

Yes coin is a lot better quality than I expected to see. Honestly I would go into a coin shop and ask the dealer what it would cost to appraise the collection for insurance value. Have him list each coin and its replacement value. Of course the ins value will be a bit iver retail but you can still use that to split the collection up.
