Ordinarily I would post this in the roll searching area but I have been doing roll searching now for quite awhile and have not seen any nickels or dimes from 2009. In fact 2009 coins seems to be quite seldom seen in circulation from my point of view.

Example: 2009 pennies: I have just finished going through 4 boxes and only found 15 pennies only one from the presidential years. I've only found 1 quarter. After going through $900 dollars of nickels I still have to find my first nickel.

They show that many millions of coins were made for this year but for some reason 2009 is coming up short. I live in a tourist destination area and I would think that after 3 years after they were minted they would start to show up.

Is anybody else seeing this result in trying to fill the 2009 slots in their circulated collections.

I'm also finding more wheat backed pennies in $25 worth of pennies than I do 2009 coins.

This is very strange to my way of thinking.

I'd be interested to know what others are finding.

I have found a good deal of dimes, quarters and pennies here in Cincinnati. Had I not gotten rid of themI would send you a few. BTW, only found 1 nickel.

I've also had terrible luck with 2009 currency. Pennies, I've found quite a few, but dimes, not a single one. Which is especially strange since I've already found 8 silvers this year. Nickels, I haven't done.

I should mention, the only one I found from roll hunting was the single nickel. The rest were found in the cash register at work.

There have been a ton of threads on this subject. 2009 Nickels and Dimes were very low mintage for modern coins. That and people are hoarding rolls of these coins. Check ebay and you will see the crazy prices for rolls of 2009 coins.

ive still found only 1 2009 dime I'm totally shocked considering I roll search dime boxes, its so ironic I've found 1 2009 and 1 Barber dime - making it seem like its as rare as finding Barber dimes haha (at least where I'm from )

I went out on line after I posted the opening post for this thread and found the attached reference from CoinNews.net. It seems that the mint stopped stamping out the Nickels and Dimes at the end of April 2009 and thus created insanely low mintages for these two coins. I thought that it was just my karma that was hexing me. Take a look at the full article.

http://www.coinnews.net/2009/04/29/...-production/

It looks like I am going to have to get to my local coin shop to fulfill my needs for these coins. If they are as low as this article paints them, I don't want to bust up 2009 mint sets as they could also by extension be something potentially special.

A month or so ago I did purchase a 2009 Statehood silver proof set and the prices didn't seem that much out of line but then we are talking quarters and not nickels and dimes.

From what they say the nickel and dimes could nickle and dime your wallet to death.

Yes! people are hoarding rolls of 2009 P nickels...With the 2009 nickels having a mintage of around 40 milion means that less than 1 in 7 people can have one of each. This assumes the coins are only in US and that people only have 1. Only way you will get a 2009 P nickel is to have someone break open their hoard rolls of 2009 P nickels.
I have 4 2009 P nickel rolls, but they cost me $30 each roll back in 2009. I guess with my 4 rolls, that means 1 in 8 people can have one of each of 2009 P nickel? Somehow the 2009-D nickels made it out and got circulated, but 99% of 2009 P nickels stayed in rolls!
PS... if you get a 2009 nickel/dime coin out of US Mint set; it will have a SATIN finish, not the same a Business coins in rolls.

I have a couple rolls (and sold a couple) of 2009-D Jeffersons that I acquired from my employers strong box from a couple years ago...but no 2009-P's.

I haven't found any 2009 nickels or dimes yet either. I only search a few rolls each year, so I don't go through that many.

It is amazing on how many you have searched through and never found any. My credit union doesn't order from the Federal Reserve, so I expect them to not have many current year coins.

It could also do to your location. With the small mintage, they could only be released in a few parts of the country and not everywhere, like usual.

I'm in central NC with none found.

If people state their location, when they find one, it would help determine where they were shipped.

In 2009, I received dozens of 2009-D Quarters and Cents from circulation, but only three 2009-D Nickels and no 2009-D Dimes. Since I am in Denver, "P" coins are almost never seen in local circulation until they are several years old.

The coins in the 2005-2010 Mint Sets are Satin Finish, and are different from business strike (for circulation) coins. This is the most important reason why the 2009 business strike Dimes and Nickels (that were not available directly from the Mint) are prized. Banks could order BU 2009 Quarters from the Federal Reserve( as they could for 1999-2008 State Quarters), and the 2009 Cents were struck in far greater quantity than the Nickels and Dimes.

I would suspect that many 2009 Satin Finish Mint Set Nickels and Dimes are now "hole fillers" in albums, in place of the business strikes.

I've seen a grand total of 3 2009-D nickels and 4 2009-D dimes in circulation. I got my 2009-P nickel and dime for my albums off ebay. I see 2009 cents fairly regularly, but even 2009 quarters are pretty darn scarce in circulation around here (Dallas-Fort Worth).
