Here's another gem found in my Gpa's things. The package was as he received it, after opening the mailing envelope. It came with a plaque and a faux leather folder of "first day covers" which are pictured, stamped, envelopes (not to be used, of course). The envelope the coin is in is still sealed and we'll attribute the bad photos to that. That also came in a thick faux leather cover

It also came with a letter that says he ordered a bronze medal, but the supplier made an error and instead they are sending him this silver coin to get rid of the excess. This is an $8 difference in price they will not charge him and hopes he will be happy with this replacement. No mention of price.

I've found other kinds of first day covers, as well as these. But I can't find anything on the medal. Has anyone seen this?

I think it's really cool. What's your opinion on how a medal like this fits into a coin collection, or does it?

Interesting philatelic-numismatic cover (PNC) you have there! Though I'm primarily a coin collector, I do have some stamps in my collection and enjoy combining stamp collecting and coin collecting when each offers a commemorative for the same person, place or event.

I have a number of PNCs in my collection -- some with coins, some with medals. I don't recall seeing this particular cover before, but I have seen others by the Medalist Cover Society offered on ebay from time to time. Fleetwood put out a variety of first day and event covers that featured US coins and medals along with corresponding US stamps; the Medalist Cover Society "brand" was one way they issued such items. Now that Fleetwood has been bought by Mystic Stamp, I'm not sure they are still making PNCs.

You rightly call the piece a medal; it's definitely not a coin. It appears to be a nicely executed, attractive medal that would fit nicely in almost any coin collection, especially one that includes commemorative coins.

I hope you enjoy owning it and remembering your grandfather through it!
