Hi Everyone, My 81 year old neighbor, Jeannie, gave me a few coins which she said she would like me to sell for her on ebay. Most of them were Walking Liberties. But 2 of them were Susan B. Anthony dollar Coins. One of those coins had a normal looking obverse, but the reverse is kind of a golden color. I have absolutely NO experience with SBA Dollars. So, I didn't know just what to do with this coin. (The other SBA she gave me was normal.) When I asked her about the Golden colored reverse coin, she had no clue as to what I was talking about! (Same as me!) Can any of you tell me what is going on with this coin? Is it a normal coin? More importantly, is it a "legal" coin? I would sure hate to put it on ebay and then find that it's an illegitimate coin, born out of wedlock! By the way, the 12 Walking Liberties Jeannie gave me to sell flew like hotcakes off ebay. Every one of them sold during the first 2 days!

It looks like a perfectly normal SBA to me, CuNi coins can sometimes tone in a golden hue. There are two divots on the reverse so it is a damaged coin. I would not recommend trying to sell it on ebay though due to the devaluing damage, just give your neighbor a $1 bill for it or tell her to spend it herself. Even a nice uncirculated 1979-S SBA would only be worth a few dollars.

Thank you, biokemist6. I'll do just that. But, as usual, now I have more questions! You know, dumb ones!
What does "CuNi" mean? What are "divots?"
I guess I shouldn't be so lazy. I could probably look these up. But you always offer such good insight and other goodies with your answers. So, if you don't mind....
Thanks

What does "CuNi" mean? What are "divots?" CuNi means copper nickel and divots are the two circle like marks on the eagles chest. John1

Cu and Ni are the elemental symbols for Copper(Latin: Cuprum) and Nickel. The standard alloy for US coinage is 75% Cu and 25% Ni with clad coinage having a core of pure copper and the CuNi alloy layers sandwiched on the outside.

Thank you, John1. But...but....but....it's not a nickel. It's a dollar. I don't understand! And WHY are those two circle like marks on the eagle's chest? Who put them there?

Ok, I got the CuNi now. Thank you, biokemist6. But I'm still puzzled about the 2 circles branded on the eagle's chest.

A round hollow object(such as a small metal tube) was hammered onto the reverse. For what purpose, I have no idea but it was definitely done after the coin left the San Francisco Mint.

What a travesty! I'm learning more and more about how some people just have no regard for things and see nothing wrong at all with defacing a coin, or (likely) any other object that tickles their fancy. Probably including other human beings!
