Got this piece cheap, but I wanted to see if anyone thinks this detail is in uncommonly good shape; it initially didn't catch my eye because of the patina, but when you look at it, the "bird" looks good from head to toe.

Nice coin - real - about average strike for a late Alamos. It is NOT, in my opinion, an outstanding coin as far as condition. From the way the toning wraps around the rays - the coin appears to have been cleaned at one time. The staining on the eagle's wings is also detrimental on late second republic issues. Stains like these are usually accompanied by surface corrosion under the stains.

I would say the coin grades in the VF range.

Well, you live and learn. I got this for slightly higher than melt value. A real shame about the cleaning, although I suspected as much after in-hand examination. When you say VF, I assume you mean relative to its type (which I understand were well-struck for the most part in the Alamos' mint's later years)? I ask because I'm certain a TPG would grade this far higher than VF...I've seen worse graded XF, and they don't typically grade contextually, as far as I know.

Also, I'd love to have you review the Fake Zacatecas(?) topic I posted back before the great power outage -- your input is superb!

tewcd I guess I missed the thread you are referring to about the Zs fakes. I will have to check.

TPG's typically do not grade either cleaned or corroded coins. I would bet it would come back as Genuine - environmental damage.
