I have several NGC slabs that have started deteriorating. About a year ago, they were all in perfect condition. I moved to a new house, so I put the slabs in a cardboard box, then stored that box in a gun safe (which also has guns in it). I have since found out that the cardboard box is wrong, and that the slab plastic has possibly reacted with gun cleaning vapors. The less affected slabs are cloudy, and the worst affected slab has actually broke open. Yikes! What should I do? Should I resubmit the coins to be reslabbed? I would appreciate your advice.

Man that sounds heavy duty! Could we get a pic of some of the affected slabs?

Yes, some pics would be great. I've stored many numismatic items in my gunsafe, and after years not a single issue. Both proof sets and NGC slabbed coins show no signs of deteriorating holders..

Is it possible to tell if the coins are damaged as well or just the slabs? I would say if its just the slabs I would send them back into being reholder, but if it has affected the coins as well sadly they would probably downgrade and possibly significantly when reslabbed. Either way the coin wouldnt be worth as much if it got damaged, but may just be better to keep them raw if thats the case then spend the money on reslabbing

The image refuses to upload. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I don't know what. In answer to basebal21, the coins seem to be unaffected.

Thank you jbuck. I have read the instructions, several times. After clicking on 'browse' and choosing the image, I clicked on 'post to COcoin's post'. After a minute or so, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

There may be something in IE is that is blocking the upload (since it has to access your hard drive to get the photos). Do you see any "informational pop-up" bars at the top or bottom of the browser window?

I don't see any pop-up bars. Would it be possible to email the picture from my regular email address?

Coin if the coins are safe for now, I would send them in for new slabs before anything could happen to them and then obviously rethink how to store them lol. Someone else may know but as far as I know once a slabs damaged its done for and theres really nothing you can do to fix it besides replace it

I will keep trying to post a picture, if only for historical interest. I took one of the coins to a coin shop, and the dealer there told me that he had never seen anything like that. Lucky me.

The slab with the most advanced damage does remind me of a Spirograph design. :) It certainly looks like chemical reaction etching.

Jbuck, I just sent you the pic and looked at a copy of the email I sent you. The picture is enormous! Maybe that was the problem all along.
