Hi I picked this coin up a few months ago, I have seen the speared bison through the middel, but no through the rump. Any feed back would be welcom. Alan

Die Crack in the Bison butt, Die Chip in the "E" of States.I am not aware if this holds a premium, they are common in all denominations.

The coin you have, as said earlier, is a die crack. Its a whole different monster than the real "speared buffalo". Even still, I believe the name is just a way of attracting attention to the error and creating hype. Yours is really interesting example of both a die crack and chip.

The Speared Buffalo "variety" was the result of a massive die gouge that bisected the buffalo. Due to the hype that surrounded that one, your die crack would no doubt fetch a small premium on ebay.

I found one a couple years back as well. Seems as though that location is easier for cracks to form at. I highly doubt the 'real' speared buffalos will hold a premium for long, since die cracks are just a part of die wear. Then again, it might be similar to the '37 3-legged...

The so-called speared buffalo is actually a die gouge, similar to the speared eagle of the Sacagawea dollar coins. It is, in a way, related to the popularity of the three legged Buffalo nickels in the sense that the name that they were tagged with made them more attractive as collectibles to collectors. Without the names they were given, they would not have had such a demand.

The original "speared bison" nickel came from the Denver mint.
