I've always just known to try and avoid buying notes with pinholes in them, but I just came to wondering how they got there originally. Are they literally from sewing pins?

Thanks in advance.

The Answer: Pins. (Hence the name)

I remember when I was a kid, I would pin notes up onto a cork board in my room.

I was just looking through a few books on U.S currency and in the glossary they say it is the result of a 19th century practice of stitching notes together for safekeeping.

I've heard that before cash registers, merchants used to keep notes pinned by denomination behind the counter.

Pins and staples.

But I think it is also from wear, since some pin holes are so tiny, it isn't from a pin at all.
