If you've been to the bank multiple times asking for rolls, you no doubt have gotten the question "What do you do with all these coins?". What is your best answer/experience? How many tellers have you confused? I'll be doing a fair amount of roll searching soon after a bit of a break and need fresh ideas!

The bank has started to ask me this much more often lately, I think because here in Canada the 1 cent coin is on the way out. If you want to lie, just say "big weekend poker game", or "kid's school project". Or you could just tell them you're a roll-searcher. I avoid that, though. By the way, I even had a teller ask me (jokingly) if I was going to throw them at people. I laughed and said no, although it planted a good idea in my head!

I've used two strategies in my youth - both successful in their different ways.
At first, I told the tellers that I was doing a comparative analysis of date distribution for a particular denomination. They were interested; it had not occurred to them that anyone would do that. I wrote an article based on the analysis, mentioned the banks. Those tellers went and fetched bags of coins from the back of the safe that had been deposited many years back and I got older coins.
Later on, I told the tellers that I was looking for old and unusual coins. For years afterwards, every time I went in those banks, the tellers would offer me foreign or strange coins for free or for minimal face value.

I told the teller that I sprinkle them around my bed while I sleep, I like the way they smell. She started cracking up. I had a friendly relationship with her for years before I ever even heard of roll hunting. Oddly enough I was roll hunting before I knew about roll hunting too.

Some times I make up these huge random lies but for the most part I just say "I collect coins" and leave it at that

I too have told them that I roll hunt & look for unusual coins. I now have a couple of bank tellers that save odd coins for me.
They have even called me and asked me to stop in when they find something unusual.

Nice ideas! I am likely to use a few in the coming weeks. I've usually just said I like to look through the rolls for certain years with errors, and on the occasion that I get a smarter teller who says "and silver?", I just smile and state that there's a lot more than that to look for. I'm just hoping that the banks don't stop me from coming, and envy all of you who are excellent terms! Happy searching all!

Dude just be honest, it will make you feel a lot better, and they really don't mind. They have a lot more roll searchers than you think. I used to have many lies or made up stories I would tell. but I was still uncomfortable. I started to just tell the truth and let them know I collect coins and I like to search rolls for old coins for my collection. A lot of times when I go in they will ask if I found anything cool lately. One teller was actually a collector and showed me what she found that day.
You can do what you want, but I found that I am much more comfortable telling the truth. If you ask the dudes in the roll searching thread, I think you will find that most of the searchers who search every week tell the truth to the tellers. It's usually beginners who make up stories. Good luck.
This is all just my opinions though.

I don't say anything. None of their cotton-picking business. Well, I'm really not that cold. People are just nosy in general.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

You shouldnt be embarassed by your hobby. Just tell them the truth. I am a coin collector! I have five banks that I go to and the gas station that I go to everyday, they all save wheat cents for me and older Jefferson nickels! I dont even have to ask anymore.
