Did you cringe how they handled the Confederate gold coin and how they used it as a screw driver to escape?

I know of a real life story where a dealer used a 1916-D Merc as a screwdriver on a capital plastics holder.

I can remember the Confederate half dollar (VERY Rare). I can't remember a confederate gold piece. That doesn't say they didn't make one just that my memory is going. I also seem to remember that there were some fakes made that were claimed to be Confederate but never circulated or was there proof found that the Confederate nation struck them.

We had a thread on Sahara when it came out in April. This was certainly a fascinating topic, especially for me since I'm a Clive Cussler fan and a Civil War nut.

If you've got fast eyes, here's a clip from the trailer which shows the Confederate gold coin:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/param...e_large.html

In point of fact, although a CSA gold $20 coin was designed, none had ever actually been minted. http://www.csacurrency.com/csacoin/csa20dol.htm

All of which brings up the question (conundrum): to what extent would one go to save one's own life? E.g., substitute a 1933 St. Gaudens $20 for the CSA $20.

I haven't yet seen the movie, but I read the book which puts the heroes (marine engineers - underwater researchers Dirk Pitt and his sidekick Al Giordino) into situations which are slightly left of credible. If any of us were stuck out in the middle of the Sahara Desert without water for as long as those two, we'd be dead, dead, dead. This type do-or-die situation is found in all Cussler novels, but Cussler is a great wordsmith and writes a wonderful and captivating novel. Sahara (the book) is a lot of fun and it sounds like the movie is the same way. What does it matter that a $20 gold CSA coin never existed nor to what use it was put as a tool in the movie? (Gotta remember that the bad guys who die don't really die in real life.)
