Coindog. to the ancients forum! Your Trajan is really nice! I agree with sap, sel, dv, and the others about the athena /owl. It looks questionable. That die break is pretty wild.

Welcome, those are some nice looking coins. Hope the Greek one ends up being authentic.

Judging by how Steves was 15.2 grams mine is way off it weighs in at 4.04 grams.

There are several known fakes of that particular Trajan issue. I don't see any die matches but a couple things would make me question it. I would post it to FORVM authentication board for more expert opinions.

Coindog => my coin is a Tet ... => if your coin only weighs 4.? grams then it must be a Drachm, not a Teradrachm ... => there is still a chance http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...thens/t.htmlhere is a link to explore => there may be others as well? ... we're definitely all rootin' for ya, dawg!!

Well, not knowing much more that I can do. Would this be a candidate for David Sear? What else can I do to determine if it is a fake or not? Thanks for all the replies. jwharper you and I are both cheap then I argued over the price off and on for an hour.

If you have the coin in hand you can examine the edge to see if there are any signs of a seam. Also if there are any cast bubbles on the surfaces.
Good photos of both sides would help those on the forums make a determination.

I agree ... a) => take a poop-load of photos so that the pros on this site can get a better "feel" for your specimen/coin ... b) is it too personal/sensitive to ask what you paid for the suspect owl? c) because if I remeber correctly, David Sear's blessing ranged anywhere from $40 to $75, depending upon whether you want a yes-no answer, compared to a thorough coin description/background ... plus, whether you wanted it to wait in a queue or whether you wanted to know ASAP!! (and yes, of course I paid $75 ... I had to know!))

I'm glad to know there is a fellow collector who is frugal Coindog. I would also like to ask where you purchased the coins. This can make a big difference as well. If you bought from a well known and distinguished dealer or from ebay (not all coins sold on ebay are fakes - I know some very well respected dealers who also sell on ebay). If the seller is one of these respected dealers, there will be a guarantee of authenticity. One last point. Before you decide to spend the money to have your coins authenticated by David Sear or any other service, I agree with MartiVltori. Post your coins and questions on forumcoins.com. There are a collection of experts who frequent that web site such as Andrew McCabe and Curtis Clay to name a couple. They can be brutal, but they will be honest.

Quote: it weighs in at 4.04 grams. Yeah...that could explain a lot of things, such as the flan shape/size, the design details, and the crack! I honestly haven't seen many owl drachms, so this is one for the real experts. I hope it turns out to be legit--those aren't as common as tetradrachms, I think.

Doucet looking over the coin there doesn't seem to be a seam or any cast bubbles. I'll try and get some better photos in the morning. Then on to forumcoins.com and here of course. Jwharper I bought it at a coin store that does NOT have any specialization. These were the only two ancient coins he had.I can handle brutal over the computer no one can see me cry. Steve6 I paid 26 for it and 40 for the other after a long debate. I would probably splurge for the details if it came out genuine. If not I wouldnt want the info. I read it could take two months, that might kill me. Poop load of pictures coming right up.

"I paid 26 for (the owl drachm)" You know...if it turns out to be real, that's one of the best deals I've heard of for a Greek coin. Just to get things moving along, I'll scan the fake databases for a match; it won't be hard to spot a copy with that crack.

Dude => in my books => if you really did only pay $26, then quit your cryin' and put the puppy into your "suspect owl drachm" category .... brutal
=> at least with my scandal, we were at $400 or $500 bucks ... man, I'll buy that fake thang of of you for $26 ... problem solved
=> I'll put it in my ever increasing collection of "what the fah am I doin' collection ancient cooins!!?' collection
... go ahead, buy some more coins ...

Yeah I figured 26 bucks was an ok deal just because I know NOTHING about ancient coins so I figured what the heck why not.
